How does menopause affect hair growth?

We now know that hair and the hair follicle are sensitive to hormone levels and the fluctuating patterns that occur throughout our lifetime, including during menopause. For example, testosterone and its more potent relative dihydrotestosterone (DHT) are key factors underlying hair thinning in both men and women, although the circulating levels will vary between sexes and over time. Specifically, during and after menopause, the hormonal changes include a rapid decline of estrogen and progesterone while testosterone remains high. When this happens, the hair growth rate slows down. There is also a drop in the percentage of hairs and length of time a hair spends in anagen (the growing phase). On top of this, the diameter of the hair follicles decreases, all of which makes the hair appear thinner and slower growing.
